February in Crete...
The month of February sees Crete beginning to get ready for Spring. Most of the olive picking has finished but there are still plenty of citrus fruits on the trees. The almond trees are just starting to blossom and wild anemones in beautiful shades of purple and pink make a colourful carpet covering the hillsides.
The birdlife in Crete is wonderful in February with many species of birds getting ready for the mating season. Walking through the olive and orange groves you get chance for some wonderful bird watching.
February in Crete also sees the time for carnival. Carnival time in Crete is normally at the end of February and marks the start of Lent. It's a real festival celebration time when villages and towns throughout Crete organsise marching bands, colourful floats and fancy dress parades. It is a real party atmosphere with lots of food and drink before the restraints of fasting during Lent.
