Artemis & Dittany of Crete...
The Greek goddess Artemis was a more recent form of the Cretan goddess Dyktynna who was strongly associated with Diktamo or Dittany of Crete as it came to be known. Artemis was well known as a skilled hunter and is depicted many times with animals of the forest around her.
Artemis is associated with Dittany of Crete firstly because of her affinity to animals. Ironically the very animals she hunted as a huntress goddess with her poisoned arrows were cured by chewing Dittany of Crete. The arrows would fall out and instantly heal any wound if the animal had chewed some of the Dittany.

Artemis, although a virgin goddess, was also patron goddess to women in childbirth. This is because she assisted her mother at her own birth helping to deliver her twin brother Apollo.
In a second connection to Dittany, Artemis as goddess of childbirth gave her name to the labour pain reducing herb to help ease women's delivery. The name Artemidion was given to Dittany in very ancient times to honour the goddess. It was common practice for women to be treated with Dittany to help them with their pregnancy.
It was known that a diadem or wreath of Dittany was placed upon the head of statues of Artemis to honour her at her temples.
